Terra cotta tiles are made from natural clay that, like brick, is fired in a kiln to create a hard building block to construct the walls of buildings and in structural fireproofing. The hollow interior is divided into cells, which gives it strength. The grooves, or ribbing, is on four sides of the outer shell to help mortar, plaster and stucco adhere to the surface.
